Outreach Programs

We will bring the history to you!!

At the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, we understand that not all students can come visit us here at the museum. We are working hard on providing a wonderful experience for students in the classroom. All you need are students who are willing to learn and let our educator come speak to them. Please choose from the several choices below:

Fort Lauderdale: Then and Now
Grades 3-5
Discover where Fort Lauderdale started. Learn about the Frank Stranahan and how the downtown was developed. Learn about life in the early 20th century and what it was like to be a Pioneer in Southern Florida, and how students went to school in 1899.

Program last about 45 minutes to an hour. Multiple classes are welcome

Take a Ride on Flagler's Railroad
Grades 3-5
Learn about the origin of transportation in Fort Lauderdale and the impact that it had on the citizens of Fort Lauderdale. Discover what changed for pioneers and how their lives became easier with the introduction of the railroad, including one of Fort Lauderdale's premier citizens, Edwin T. King.

Program last about 45 minutes to an hour. Multiple classes are welcome

Traveling Schoolhouse
Grades 2-6
We bring Fort Lauderdale’s first schoolhouse to you!
An opportunity to experience school in 1899 is one that we do not want your students to miss.  We will bring McGuffey's Eclectic Readers, slate boards, photographs, and other objects of the time to you.  All you need is a chalkboard/whiteboard for the Modern Ivy Cromartie to use.  We will present the history of the school, lessons from the time, and even some games the children would play at recess.

Program lasts about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. Because of the number of supplies, the cap of students can not exceed 30.
