Introduction about our School Programs

Each year 6,000 Broward County school children learn the history of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County while visiting the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society.

Located in downtown Fort Lauderdale on River walk, The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society provides Education Programs designed for Social Studies, Science and Language Arts Enrichment.

Our programs connect children to the history and culture of the community. At The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society we offer a wide array of dynamic learning opportunities that support the Broward County curriculum. Our Pioneer School Day Program communicates across boundaries of language, culture and time and can facilitate students' understanding of the past through active questioning, interactive; hands-on teaching methods. Students will use replicas of what the pioneers before us used for everyday needs and activities.

Teachers visiting the site recently with their students tell us, " my students remember the learning experience and lessons long after the quizzes have been forgotten ." And " seeing first hand the wildlife and native plants along the New River and learning how their great-great parents may have had the same experiences captured my student's attention and held their interest throughout the visit ."

When the children see the old fashioned toys and cozy rooms in the 100 year-old King-Cromartie House many tell us, " I want to spend the night ." As their eyes open wide to take in never before seen items, the most frequently asked questions are "what is that?" and "what does it do?" The Society educators dressed in period costumes answer the questions and demonstrated how to use a particular artifact, antique, game or tool.
