Step Back in Time:

Be a Volunteer!!!!

Volunteer Tim Myette guiding an Adult Group Tour

Whether you like to give tours, talk about history, work with children, or garden, we could use your time and talents at the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, where the railroad crosses the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Each member of our volunteer group, the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society Friends, plays a critical role in helping us share the history of our city and county.

Peggy Stanley, Sharon Menish, and Cynthia Percy at the FLHS Christmas Party.

King-Cromartie House and New River Inn

You don’t need prior knowledge of Florida history to become a tour guide for the 1907 King-Cromartie House or the Museum of History at the 1905 New River Inn. Dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers are needed for both. Long-time volunteers and Historical Society staff provide the training and coaching. This is a unique opportunity to learn, then teach others, about Fort Lauderdale’s history.

School Tours and 1899 Schoolhouse

Volunteers who love working with children are needed to help in the 1899 Schoolhouse For example, they learn how to write on slate and learn the pledge from 1899.

Hoch Heritage Center

The Hoch Heritage center research staff also could use volunteers to help in a variety of research capacities, including cataloging, scanning, filing, and working with historic photos.

Various Activities

Other important volunteer roles include computer specialists, clerk/typists, gardeners, ‘handy’ men and women who like painting and carpentry, and special event assistance.
